Senior Section Permits

To explain what the Senior Section Permits are and what you can do with them here are some FAQ's.

What are the Senior Section Permits?

OVERNIGHT PERMIT

This enables any Senior Section member to take up to eight other Senior Section members or Guides away overnight. The event may vary in length, eg from 7pm Friday to 10am Saturday or from 10am Saturday to 4pm Sunday, but must only include one night.

SENIOR SECTION PERMIT

This enables any Senior Section member to take up to eight other Senior Section members or Guides on a camp or holiday of two nights or more. The candidate must have a relationship with those eight members, they should be peers in the Senior Section or Guides with whom she works closely, eg a Young Leader/Guider may take away up to eight Guides with whom she works. This must be with the approval of the Senior Section Leader, Look Wider Team and Guide Leader, where appropriate. Some modules completed for the Senior Section Permit are equivalent to those in the Camp and Holiday Scheme and will not need to be repeated if you decide to go and take a full licence.

Who can take the Permits?

Any member of the Senior Section can take their Camp Permit and/or Overnight Permit provided they have approval from a Senior Section Leader and relevant Advisers, eg Camp or Outdoor Adviser. If you are taking Guides away, then you'll need permission from their Leader. You will not be able to use your Senior Section Permit after your 26th birthday, however, you will be able to transfer modules already completed to the Camp and Holiday Scheme.

Will I be solely in charge?

You will be in charge of organisation. This can be hard work so you can ask others to help you and you could delegate tasks to your friends, for example you may like to get another member of the Senior Section to plan your activities for you. If you are under 18, then you need to have someone over 18 with you or within calling distance so they can come over in an emergency to help you out.

What do I have to do to get a Senior Section Permit?

The easiest way to find out what you are required to do is to look at the syllabus for each Permit. If you have any further queries, then ask your unit Leader, another Senior Section member, District/Division Commissioner or Adviser. Note that the permits consist of various different modules, and you only have to carry out certain modules for a particular permit (click here to soe table of requirements).

What can I do with my Permit?

Once you have got your Permit, you will receive a badge and certificate and be able to take other Senior Section members away on camps and for overnight visits as often as you like.

INTERNATIONAL MODULE

You can take a group of Senior Section members abroad, but you must take the international module. Before you can take this module, however, you need to hold a permit with the relevant modules for the type of holiday planned (ie module 7 if it is to be a camp and module 9 if it is to be an expedition. An Overnight Permit is not sufficient). Talk to your Senior Section Leader/Adviser at the earliest opportunity if you are planning to take this module and keep in touch with her and your mentor while working on the module.
