The Duke of Edinburgh's Award

Girlguiding continues to offer members in the school year 9 or above till aged 25, the opportunity to complete their Duke of Edinburgh's Awards. For more information about the Duke of Edinburgh's Award please see www.dofe.org 

There are three levels of programme you can do - the main differences between them are the minimum length of time they take to complete, how challenging they are and the minimum age you can start.

      ·         Bronze - for those aged 14+ (or aged 13 & in the school year they turn 14). Takes at least six months to complete.

·         Silver - for those aged 15+ (or aged 14 & in the school year they turn 15). Takes at least 6 months if you have completed Bronze or 12 months for direct entrants.

·         Gold - for those aged 16+. Takes at least 12 months if you have completed Silver or 18 months for direct entrants.

You must complete your award by your 25th Birthday

To complete a DofE Award, you must undertake a period of activity in each of the following sections: volunteering, physical, skills-development and an expedition. For the Gold level you will also need to take part in a residential event.

Expedition dates for 2022. 
Bronze:

In 2022, we are offering a Bronze Walking Expedition, which will take place in Leicestershire.

  • Sunday 27 February 2022 4pm – Zoom session Bronze DofE Expedition Training #1
  • Sunday 6 March 2022 (times tbc) – Thurnby Scout & Guide HQ – Face to Face Bronze Expedition Training #2
  • Sat 23 – Sun 24 April 2022 – Qualifying Expedition, Market Bosworth area

Cost: £26 (special offer: £45 Expedition + Bronze registration)

Silver:

In 2022, we are offering a unique Silver Bushcraft Expedition, which will take place in Leicestershire.

  • Sunday 27 February 2022 (time tbc) – Zoom session Silver DofE Expedition Training #1
  • Sat 9 – Mon 11 April (Leicestershire Easter holidays): A Bushcraft Training Day followed by a two-day practice expedition.
  • Sat 27 – Mon 29 August (August Bank Holiday weekend): Silver Qualifying Expedition. You will spend at least one night sleeping in a hammock.

Cost: £75 (including training, practice & qualifying expedition). A deposit of £25 is due as soon as possible to reserve your place. A further payment of £25 will be due by the end of March 2022, and the final payment of £25 by the end of May 2022.

If you have not already done so, you will also need to pay the Silver DofE registration fee of £25.

Details

Gold:

In 2022, we are offering a Gold Paddling expedition, exploring the waterways of the Midlands using open canoes, stand up paddleboards & maybe also kayaks. This is an expedition that will challenge you in new ways but will give you memories that will last for a long time.

You do not need previous paddling experience but you MUST be able to swim, be comfortable around water

  • Sunday 20 March at Holme Pierrepont. Times tbc. Welcome to Gold DofE session – a short water-based session followed by a discussion of everything you need to know about the Gold expedition
    •          If you decide after this session that you do not wish to complete a paddling expedition, you can withdraw from the expedition for a full refund less the £25 deposit. If we can fill your place, the remaining £25 will be refunded.
  • Sat 18 June & Sun 19 June at Holme Pierrepont: Initial Paddle Training, including rescue skills. These will be full days but you will go home to sleep.
  • Sat 25 June & Sun 26 June – Leicestershire. Day Paddles – full days paddling along a canal/river where you will bring your bags, check your kit & learn to load the boat as well as practicing your skills over a longer period of time. You will go home overnight.
  • Mon 18 – Weds 20 July 2022: Practice Expedition - River Soar through Leicestershire. Full details of timings/locations will be provided nearer the time but this is a full expedition where you will be carrying all your kit and camping overnight. We expect that the expedition will finish at or near Holme Pierrepont.
  • Sat 23 – Tues 26 July 2022: Gold Qualifying Expedition. This will take place on the River Trent from Stafford to Holme Pierrepont.

 

Cost: £250 (including all training, practice & qualifying expedition) If you have not already done so, you will also need to pay the Gold DofE registration fee of £32.

  • A deposit of £25 is due as soon as possible to reserve your place. A further payment of £25 will be due by 20 February. Further payment instalments of £50 will then be due on 20 March, 20 April, 20 May and 20 June
